How to Prepare a Tea Infusion

Herbs have active principles, called chemical compounds. We must take into account that these chemicals could change their curative effects during the preparation, unless it is applied the proper procedure when they are utilized. To get the best plant extract depends on how well someone knows to prepare an herbal tea, in fact, doing the correct technique.

In general, we can prepare a medicinal tea from a single plant, or from mixtures of plants (using two or more herbs together). It is very important to follow the recommendation, regarding ” how to do…” and the prescribed quantities for each plant of the mixture.

There are several common ways to prepare the medicinal plants for internal use: tea, decoction, infusion, medicinal wine, and powder. For external use, medicinal plants can be prepared as: medicinal vinegar, poultices, inhalation and medicinal baths.

Herbal teas are effective in both, acute health problems and chronic health problems. People who drink consistently, over a long period of time (three months and more) a certain tea; this guarantees gradually (but surely), long-lasting results.

The tea infusion is the most common method used for the preparation of the herbal tea in everyone’s home.

This method, allow us to extract the active principles of the plant and get relief for a certain health problem accordingly. For this purpose, we have to use the flowers, the leaves, and the aerial part of the plant.

There are few situations when we can use the roots for the tea infusion, but rarely.

If you harvest the plant, first, wash the plant and place it on a clean tablecloth; then, leave it to dry, away from the sunlight. In this way, the plant will be easy to grind into a food mixer. Keep the dried plant in a jar, in a dried place.

The quantities of plants used for tea infusion can vary, but, as a general rule it can be used one teaspoon of dried herb, or two teaspoons of green herbs per cup of water (about 250 ml). You can also prepare the tea in large quantities; for this purpose, place 4-6 tablespoons of the dried plant or about 10 tablespoons of green plant to one liter of water.

There are Five ways to Prepare a Tea infusion:

a. Place one teaspoon of dried herb in a small pot; pour 250 ml boiling water over the plant; cover the tea with a lid and leave it to soak for 10-15 minutes. Then, strain the liquid through a sieve.

b. A powerful medicinal tea can be prepared as follows: put the herbs and the cold water in a pot.

Place the pot over low heat and wait until start boiling.
Exactly when the water begins to boil, remove from heat and cover.
Allow to infuse for a period of up to 10 minutes, then strain and put it in a thermos /bottle.
By this method you get a strong tea, but not all the plants are suitable for this method.

c. Overnight infusion: Using this method, the vitamins and minerals are extracted from plants, and the active components of the herb. This method, besides medicinal qualities provides a nutritional drink, which is wonderful as a replacement of vitamin and mineral supplements. Place the herbs (or combination of herbs) in a jar with lid, pour boiling water over and cover immediately. Allow infuse overnight (6-10 hours); in the morning strain the tea and it is ready for drinking.

d. Tea infusion with cold water: This type of infusion is used for certain herbs (such as mistletoe or comfrey root) whose active constituents can be destroyed in boiling water. Place the herb in a cup or bowl, preferably of glass or porcelain and pour cold water over. Cover and leave to infuse overnight. Strain the liquid and the tea are ready and can be used.

e. Infusing the herbs in the sunlight / moonlight

How to prepare a tea infusion of direct sunlight, place the herb in a clear glass jar, pour the cold water and cover tightly. Place the jar in direct sunlight and leave to infuse for a few hours, until the color of tea turns a rich brown or green, depend on what kind of plant is in the jar.

How to prepare a moonlight tea infusion: put the herbs (or combination of plants) in a crystal bowl or in a glass cup. The best would be to use (if you can) green plants and flowers freshly picked. Cover the plant with fresh water and put the bowl directly into the moonlight.
